"DO WHAT YOU CAN FOR I AND I"

two albums by Burning Spear - Marcus Garvey, a reggae album, and Garvey's Ghost, a dub version of Marcus Garvey. what better way to enjoy the relationship between the two genres?

this music is groovy beyond all telling. groove based music like this is a great barometer for how you are feeling on the scales of open-closed, positive-negative. if you are in a good headspace you will be able to sit back and ride on these grooves for hours. if you are feeling judgmental or irritable this music will seem dull and boring.

i have been listening to dub and reggae since i read william gibson's 'neuromancer'. in that book, there is a space colony called Zion that has been created by Jamaicans. in Zion, there are two guys who drive a spaceship called the Marcus Garvey and they listen to dub nonstop. at one point, the main character Case is on the verge of death, wandering through a shadowy dream. he follows a pulsing boom that seems to be coming from the sky, and as this boom gets gradually louder it leads him back to consciousness. the boom turns out to be a dub record Maelcum was listening to. i could easily imagine it to be 'red, gold, and green' from the above albums - i imagine rushing across a post apocalyptic desert on the way to New Jerusalem.

Garvey's Ghost is what the title suggests... a misty and skeletal version of the record it is based on. it is impressionistic. sketchy. futuristic.

just chill and enjoy
