THE WORLD'S BUT THEIRS, BUT MY BELOVED'S MINE

it's no secret that i love the music of benjamin britten. the canticles are 5 religious pieces of vocal music he wrote through the course of his life. they are all beautiful. the first uses words from the poem 'my beloved is mine and i am his' by francis quarles. the words are about unconditional love for another - in the context of religious music that other is jesus, in the context of britten's personal life it was his life partner peter pears. the second canticle is the story of abraham and issac. the third is based in the poem 'still falls the rain' by edith sitwell. the last two are based on t.s. eliot poems.

i won't even describe the music much - britten is on a whole other level which you can't imagine till you've heard. stories n images trip you out with mind blowing vividity. look up the words when you listen.
