OF ALL THE WORLD'S FAMOUS SINGERS I HAVE EVER SEEN ON THE MOVIE SCREEN

discover america by van dyke parks '72. this guy is an owen pallett type character from the 60s onward. pop meets sweet classical string arrangements. and in this case, meets calypso - all the songs are parks arrangements of old calypso tunes from trinidad. i found this one thanks to flash strap. flash strap also has a double album mixtape containing the original versions of these songs as well as other great stuff here

the string arrangements and production on this are just great - it's not classical drenched in the reverb of a giant hall kind of shit. and there's lots of steel pan mixed in with rock bands and strings. his voice and the subject matter are secretly funny.

after reading cat's cradle calypso took on an absurdious religious vibe to me. in that book, bokononism is a religion based on the calypsos of bokonon.
