Classical Hindustani: Pandit Abhay Narayan Mallick

(download this entry here)

Dhrupad is a style which tends to be a mode of praise and worship which is raw and no bullshit.

the most unreal hymn possible. if you have ears to listen, there's something special in here.

SECTIONS TO DHRUPAD: ALAP - long drawn out lines improvised and ornamented, unmetered.

JOR - MOTHERFUCKERS NEVER HEARD A BEAT DROP LIKE A GOOD JOR SECTION BEFORE. NOTE: TABLAS PLAYERS BE LURKIN FOR LIKE 20 MINUTES BEFORE THEY GIVE YOU WHATS RIGHTFULLY JORS.

JHALA - if there is Jhala in your Jor, it's like a double brahma. a rhythmic motorboat. keep your ears on the drone note and just trust that things are going to work out for you on the other end. Jhala is when rhythm overtakes melody. very special, like a few grandmothers per child.

It took a couple years before this album really sunk into my ears, and finally the stars are ever present in my domepiece since.

thanks Abhay Narayan Mallick.
