" A-MOON-A-GA-NA-AIYYYJEE-NA-PA-NEW-MAOW"

an exchange i had with a young guitar student of mine upon my showing him this recording of Amir Khan went something like this:

"what kind of music does this sound like to you?"
"it sounds like a drunk person"
"it's indian music"
"i thought indians were supposed to be good at music"
"they are... this is really good"
"since when are indians bad at music?"

my student associated the voice with drunkeness because it is completely untethered - purely and wildy expressive. this is some primeval music of the spheres type shit. i don't know how it works, i just know that it does. i have spent many a summer night walk listening to raga malkauns. as such i associate it with humidity, stars, dupont ave, and christie pits. there is what we would call a 'beat drop' at 14:25 of that song. and man, does it ever drop!

according to wikipedia, Amir Khan is "considered one of the most influential figures in Hindustani classical music"
