THE SLITS

this album art concept didn't seem to work quite as well when ZZ Top tried it

although we wouldn't like to think it, music definitely has a sort of gender discrimination embedded within its' culture. there just doesnt appear to be as much real estate in this cul-de-sac of art for females to take residence in. There is hope, there are outliers.    from courtney love, yoko ono, all the way to the spice girls, the females who break into industry seem to have one thing in common - they are Jack Nicholson Shining type insane.

Enter "THE SLITS" and all female band from the late 70s and on. with a pretty minimalist sound and a sandpaper-jaggy take on beatles-esque vocal harmonies and exchange, THE SLITS are a band who started off pretty interesting and thankfully just kept getting more bizzonks as they went.

here's a cut off their first album - "CUT" called "instant hit" where in they try and be pop stars or something:

and here's a piece from their album "return of the giant slits" just 2 years later , which i think is fucking awesome and only heard when i came to write this article. "LIFE ON EARTH"

(once 3:00 kicks in , that's the dip to the chips right there man)

sounds like an accurate representation of how waking up and taking a crowded streetcar makes me feel.  i hope you guys check these ladies out because nothing gets me more excited when a band releases an album after a successful one that delivers on exactly zero expectations they may have laid out for you.
